Huge THANKS to Venom Skate Products for helping put this together. 50 MPH at 50 Years Old!

Years of head injuries and the effects have caught up to not only me but many of my peers.  Traumatic brain injury symptoms are part of my everyday life and the people I love. Safety Third Blog is a way to reach out and let you know its never too late! Masking the issue with drugs and alcohol are common and unfortunately have a common tragic result.

After decades of camouflaging my symptoms with bad choices and watching my friends do the same, it was time start living again. Safety Third Blog will be a source for behavioral progression. Lifestyle changes through healing activities and a healing diet. It takes will and awareness to make fundamental changes. Safety Third will be documenting my journey towards living my best life.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE!

Toast to Coast

Helmets save lives.  A no brainer as the kids parents might say.  My helmet not only kept me alive, but it is recognized around the world.  Nothing to do with my travels and not because of any ballyhoo over me.  This Azonic downhill mountain bike helmet has bounced...

Namaste here if you’re calling the cops!

This blog has a big fat disclaimer to start off with…there’s 8000 years of ancient Indian history about yoga.  I don’t know anything about that stuff, and I’ve hit my head too many times.  Holiday blues got you down?  I’ve had them since the Fourth of...

Good Head

Somebody at the brain injury awareness group asked “What kind of helmet do you wear snowboarding?”  The only time I wear a lid snowboarding is when it was required for racing boardercross.  My unprotected head sank into my hands.  Here it comes…” I...

Writing about riding.

Whoever you are, whether you have suffered great loss, head injuries or age-related cognitive decline, it’s never too late to create new neural connections.  Science dude!  I’ve my made struggle with reading clear and what it has taken me to turn the page. Riding my...

Thank you

Do not travel.  Stay home and be thankful for what you have.  That’s an order.  Being told what to do and following orders isn’t for me.  Following orders or rules has been a long-standing problem after years of defying authority.  I’ve been...

Wind Therapy

To blow off steam or control stress, I always try moving forward.  Not the self-help tomorrow is going to be better than today, but head into the wind while moving fast.  Play is where its at!  Big Wheels, bicycles, dirt bikes, skateboards, any toy or vehicle that...

When Joel and I get together, all heck breaks lose!

I’ve been very lucky to travel globally using competitive skateboarding as an excuse.  I didn’t have savings or come from means.  I had burner jobs I could easily quit.  Working in restaurants, I could work extra hours and have an expendable job.  My friends and...

Schuck Aspen

Rob Shucking Oysters on the curb!

Don’t let your focus leave.

When I run in the morning, I have my course. There is a small creek near the Safety Third Compound that is my stopping point for 50 jumping jacks.  The bridge now covered with frost, demands more focus.  I could break a hip at my age.  I’ve only missed...

I run every morning and still don’t know why.

There’s fewer hummingbirds in the morning now that it’s getting colder.  The bears have moved on to prepare for winter, littering the forest with broken berry bushes and cherry trees.  The aspen leaves that shrouded the trails around the Safety Third Compound now...

The Western United States is suffering from intense wildfires and we can help.  Please go to www.redcross.org and donate $25 to the Western Wildfires.  Email the receipt of your donation to Rob@Safetythird.blog and please put “wildfire entry” in the subject...

Bombing hills with Leftover Salmon for your brain and ears.

State Bridge Lodge has scarred me and many others for life.  In my case, the scar is on my forehead and came from falling headfirst (while seated) onto a rock making up a fire ring.  Camping is about being resourceful, camping at State Bridge, Colorado can be about...

50 at 50

Fifty miles per hour at fifty years of age on a skateboard. It’s my latest trick.  I’ve thought about this a couple times over the years and more as the date gets closer.  Most of my life going 50 mph on a skateboard wasn’t a big deal. My birthday did fall...

US Olympic Snowboarder Jake Pates stopped by!

Cool thing about living in the high country, some of the biggest snowboarding events in the business are only a snowballz throw away.  The Safety Third Compound is close enough to Aspen to sneak into the X Games...

Brains, bruins and berries! Oh my!

It’s getting colder out, I could see my breath this morning.  For the last 35 years that exhale was smoke.  I would get winded running for a bus, now I run every morning at daybreak.  Yes, I’m proud of myself and not afraid to let you know.  I’m that irritating jogger...

A Spiritual Journey; STURGIS and the Seven Chakras Day 1

I'm looking forward to passing on the need for helmets and a healthy lifestyle to my brothers and sisters attending the 80th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I plan on eating well or at least safely. I don’t think trucks of kale will be receiving police escorts to the...

A Spiritual Journey; STURGIS and the Seven Chakras Day 2

Day 2 The Sacral Chakra Laying low in a parking lot with a couple dozen others seeking shelter from the storm.  We are behind a Union Pacific train car getting respite from the passing thunderstorms.  It got sideways here fast.  In the scramble a couple bikes hit the...

STURGIS; A spiritual journey and the Seven Chakras Day 3

DAY III  The Solar Plexus Chakra   Three weeks ago, I spelled Chakra wrong.  5 months ago, I couldn’t walk up a hill without getting winded.  Now I’m running further than I have in my life.  My buddies are asking what I’m running from.  Today I’m running from my...

A Spiritual Journey; Sturgis and the Seven Chakras Day 4

The Heart Chakra Waking up at Devils Tower this morning and the moon is still hanging out as the sun lights up some fast-moving clouds. This sky and spectacular monument fill the heart with love, compassion and gratitude for the universe.  I got out here early to beat...

A Spiritual Journey; Sturgis and the Seven Chakras DAY 5

The peak of the Perseid meteor shower is goin off while I’m packing the bike.  Frequent enough to see tracers reflecting in the chrome after giving the bike a wash yesterday.  It’s always darkest before the dawn and the best time to stargaze.  It’s going to be hot...

A Spiritual Journey; Sturgis and the Seven Chakras Day 6

Wandering around Main Street I did catch the scent of sage and incense.  Behind the hotdog stand sits the “Sturgis Serenity Building” and The Giving Goat Crystal Shop.  Sturgis’s version of a wellness center complete with weekly AA meetings, Taoism, Buddhism, crystals...

A Spiritual Journey; Sturgis and the Seven Chakras DAY 7

Misspelling sacred for scared can significantly change the meaning of a story.  When your riding and writing from a motorcycle you won’t catch it for a few hundred miles or when you stop for a long rest.  Being on the bike takes total focus and awareness,...

It’s hard to come up with a spicy title relating to Curcumin.

Nutritionists are getting more attention now with the VID and people’s desire to boost their immune systems.  Webinars, seminars and online classes about how to stay healthy are kind of my thing now.  Last year at this time, I think I was in Vegas knocking...

DUH!

My research into brain health and head injury recovery hasn’t been easy or heaps of fun.   Reading has been gratifying and illuminating.  The gratification comes from so many directions.  Expanding my knowledge of diet, exercise, emotional...
